A number of heavy metals are toxic even in small concentrations (e.g. arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium and mercury). These heavy metals are not degradable and may accumulate in the food chain.
Heavy metals may be found in paints and coatings, especially as pigments or siccatives (drying agents). Heavy metal in flooring may be released as a result of abrasion.
Coatings must be free from compounds that contain arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium (VI) or mercury. Any impurities must not exceed 0.005% by weight (50 ppm). In the case of arsenic, the maximum admissible content is 0.001% by weight (10 ppm), and in the case of cadmium and mercury, it is 0.0002% by weight (2 ppm).
