Metal production has massive environmental impacts. In the case of single-material metal products, these impacts may in part be compensated for by high-level recycling. Metals in composites can only be recovered at a high cost, if at all. When metals in composites are disposed of, further problems arise (e.g. metal mobilisation in incineration plants and landfills).
Building products coated with metal film (insulation materials, plaster boards etc.) should be avoided whenever possible.
Composites made from different constituent materials (e.g. insulation materials and plaster boards) should also be avoided whenever possible.
Composite products containing metal must not be used for insulation materials, gypsum boards or plastic liners. This does not apply to insulation materials for technical insulation and vacuum-insulated panels.
