According to the WHO, fibres that are longer than 5 µm, have a diameter under 3 µm and an aspect ratio greater than 3:1 are regarded as respirable fibres. The maximum length of such fibres is around 100 µm. Fibres that meet these criteria are referred to as WHO fibres and may enter the lung. They are particularly critical from a toxicological point of view and thus should not be emitted into indoor air.
Mineral wool insulation that faces the interior must be installed with a dust-tight sealing in order to prevent fibres, especially WHO-fibres, from subsequently being released into indoor air.

The criterion was withdrawn on November 30, 2021 by decision of the ÖkoBauKriterien Advisory Board with the following reason: Dust-tight/flow-tight are not defined terms. There is no known case of increased fiber concentrations in the room air being measured when the insulation was installed correctly.
