2. 6. 8. Limitation of wood preservatives

description relevant product categories

explanation

Wood preservatives are active substances or mixtures containing active substances, which are intended to protect wood or wood-based materials from being attacked by organisms destroying wood or affect wood quality. Wood preservatives fall under the scope of biocide legislation based on Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012 (Biocide Regulation).
In most cases, the use of biocides involves a certain risk for both the user and the persons exposed to the materials treated with biocides, as well as the environment. Before biocides are used, it should thus always be verified if they are actually necessary and whether the product chosen is suitable for the intended purpose.
The use of wood preservatives can be avoided by numerous logistical, planning, constructive or building-physical possibilities.

If the use of wood preservatives can demonstrably not be prevented, agents must be used that have been approved according to the Biocidal Products Act, Federal Law Gazette I No. 105/2013 and have been positively assessed by experts in the field of wood preservation and toxicology.

Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 May 2012 concerning the making available on the market and use of biocidal products (Biocide Regulation)

minimum requirement

Treatments containing active substances may only contain substances that are listed in the wood preservative list of the Association of the Chemical Industry (Austria) or in the wood preservative list of the Institute for Building Technology (Germany) and are technically suitable. The criterion is regarded as met if neither anti blueing agents nor other treatments containing active substances for exterior wood parts are included. This must be demonstrated by a valid test certificate related to the intended use.

Proof:

Manufacturer's declaration and proof of entry in the current Austrian or German directory of wood preservatives.

If no wood preservatives are included, the criterion is considered to be met. Biocides for in-can preservation are dealt with in a separate criterion.
